Goals and Methodology
Though my emphasis on each of these goals may vary in response to the needs of the learning community, I believe that successful theatre training cultivates the following learning experiences. My methods are oriented towards enabling students to grow in the following areas:
Growing as artists: learning that reflects good practices in theatre as practiced in local, national, and international community
- reflection on and support of the assets, approaches, and traditions each student brings to their work
- acting coaching and direction centered on students' strengths
- critical interpreting of traditions and current movements in the field
- physical and vocal approaches to character and text
- improvisation and creative play as both art form and creative process
- scene tactics in acting, directing, and dramaturgy
- musical theatre technique
- collaborative theatre practices: devising and playmaking
- community-based creative theatre, including forum theatre, documentary theatre, and playback theatre
Growing as learners: understanding what life is about and what our world is like, how to express truths about ourselves and others, how to work together to find solutions to problems
- inquiry-based learning
- story-centered creation of original work
- incorporation of engaging, challenging, and culturally sustaining practices, traditions, texts, methods and artistic perspectives
- encouragement of exploration and searching as a practice of the learning community
Growing as people, as leaders, as citizens: personal and communal growth
- giving and receiving feedback as daily practice
- teaching values of supporting our ensemble and sharing (the) space
- creating opportunities to recognize and pursue passions and joys
- cultivating a practice in the work of listening as central to the creative process
- analysis of and responsiveness to power dynamics in our communities, support of student leadership
- establishing a reflective practice both within and outside of the creative process
